The Faithful Brothers: Israeli Soul Band Dedicated to the Cause

Tel Aviv, a city renowned for its vibrant culture and diverse music scene, may seem an unlikely birthplace for a Northern Soul movement. Yet, beneath the surface of this bustling Mediterranean metropolis, a passionate group of individuals was dedicated to preserving the soulful rhythms and melodies that defined an era. The Tel Aviv Soul Club, or TASC, became the epicenter of this unexpected phenomenon, where enthusiasts gathered to revel in the timeless tunes of classic Northern Soul 45s and early 1960s R&B. At the heart of this movement were two brothers, Johnnie and Bin Neeman, whose journey into the world of rare soul had been shaped by their extensive travels during their childhood, thanks to their father’s diplomatic career.

Yashiv Cohen, a visionary DJ and the lead singer of Men of North Country, recognized the potential within the Neeman brothers and their extensive soul collections. Driven by his passion for soul music, Yashiv conceived the idea of forming a new band that would pay homage to the authenticity of Northern Soul. He envisioned a group that would transcend the boundaries of time, delivering soulful melodies with a contemporary twist. The name for this endeavor was inspired by the Neeman brothers’ Hebrew surname, which translated to “Faithful” in English. Thus, the Faithful Brothers came into being.

Although the Neeman brothers were collectors rather than musicians, Yashiv’s unwavering belief in their abilities spurred them on. Armed with a set of lyrics from Yashiv, Johnnie and Bin embarked on a musical journey, learning to play instruments and experimenting with chords in Johnnie’s record room. Over the years, their dedication and musical progression transformed them from collectors to DJs and, finally, into skilled musicians.

The Faithful Brothers evolved into an eight-piece band, complete with a robust brass section that added depth and soul to their sound. Their music, a blend of Detroit’s infectious four-on-the-floor beats, the lush harmonies of Philly Soul, and the raw energy of traditional R&B, resonated with listeners. The album, aptly titled “The Faithful Brothers,” encapsulated their musical essence, capturing the spirit of the Northern Soul movement while infusing it with modern production techniques.

In a music landscape often dominated by covers and reinterpretations, the Faithful Brothers stood out for their commitment to originality. Each track on the album was a testament to their creative prowess, drawing inspiration from the soulful legacy of the past while adding contemporary flair. The instrumental track “They Don’t Know” was a prime example, a sonic gem that could have emerged straight from the hallowed studios of Gamble and Huff. Its infectious rhythm and timeless melody promised to set dance floors ablaze, invoking the spirit of bygone eras while remaining relevant in the present.

The Faithful Brothers’ self-titled album, released on September 15th, 2023, via Mr. Mellow’s Music, marked a significant milestone in their musical journey. With the support of influential figures like Craig Charles, who recognized their talent on his BBC Funk and Soul show, the Faithful Brothers aimed to defy conventions and bring their authentic soul sound to the masses. As the album echoed through speakers, it invited listeners, whether casual music lovers or devoted soul aficionados, to immerse themselves in its rich melodies and discover their own favourite among the twelve tracks—a delightful assortment of musical chocolates waiting to be savoured.
