Bridging the Gap: Understanding the Snobbery Between Original Mods, Revivalists, and Millennial Mods

Embrace Diversity and Evolution

The Mod subculture has a rich history that spans several decades, and with each passing generation, new interpretations and adaptations emerge. However, within the Mod community, there can sometimes be a sense of snobbery and division between original Mods, revivalists, and millennial Mods. In this blog post , we aim to explore the reasons behind this snobbery and discuss the importance of embracing the diversity and evolution of the Mod subculture.

The Original Mod Movement

The original Mods of the 1960s were pioneers of the subculture, embodying a rebellious spirit and a distinct fashion sense. They were at the forefront of social change and sought to challenge the status quo. As a result, some original Mods may view their era as the golden age of Mod culture, leading to a sense of superiority and exclusivity.

The Revivalists

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Mod subculture experienced a revival, with bands like The Jam, Secret Affair, The Purple Hearts and The Specials leading the way. This resurgence brought a new wave of followers who embraced Mod fashion and a change of direction in music. However, some original Mods may view revivalists as imitators or diluters of the original movement, leading to a sense of snobbery and dismissal.

The Millennial Mods

As time passed, the Mod subculture continued to evolve, and today we see a new generation of Mods emerging. Millennial Mods bring their own unique perspectives and interpretations to the subculture, incorporating modern influences into their fashion and music choices. However, this evolution can sometimes be met with resistance and snobbery from both original Mods and revivalists who may view it as a departure from the authentic Mod ethos.

Embracing Diversity and Evolution

It is essential to recognise that subcultures naturally evolve and adapt over time. Each generation brings its own experiences and influences, shaping the subculture in new and exciting ways. Rather than fostering snobbery and division, it is crucial for Mods of all generations to embrace the diversity within the community and appreciate the different interpretations and influences each generation brings.

Building Bridges

Instead of perpetuating snobbery, it is more productive to foster a sense of unity and understanding within the Mod community. That was the reason I created Mods Of Your Generation to begin with. By acknowledging and respecting the contributions of each generation, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all Mods. This can be achieved through being respectful of each other, open dialogue, shared experiences, and a willingness to learn from one another.

Inspiring Generations

The Mod subculture has a rich and storied history, with each generation leaving its mark on the movement. While snobbery and division may exist between original Mods, revivalists, and millennial Mods, it is essential to recognise the value of diversity and evolution within the community. By embracing different interpretations and fostering unity, we can ensure that the Mod subculture continues to thrive and inspire for generations to come.
